Quirks of a Historic Home
In this episode of Love Where You Live, we visit our client who owns a beautiful home in Downtown Harrisonburg. She purchased their historic home in part because of its unique quirks, which contributed to some very interesting challenges when proposing a bathroom renovation. Their bathroom tiles were starting to look weathered with an outdated style. The bathroom used to be an attic which created some challenges as far as the shape of the room, the walls, and the ceiling and really difficult angles. Their main priority was to upgrade the function and flow of the space.
Less is More
One way we were able to solve a huge problem for our clients was removing their shower door. Previously, due to the angle of the walls and ceiling, they had to open the door at a very particular angle and squeeze around their toilet and enter their shower enclosure. Our solution was to remove the door entirely and create a shower wall out of a glass panel, where the homeowners can walk easily into the shower along the wall opposite the toilet. We also built a beautiful tile ledge into the shower for storage that manages to look sleek while still providing the homeowners with plenty of space for any and all of their products.
A Nod to the Home’s History
Another huge goal of the homeowners was to give the bathroom a contemporary feel while still having elements from the era the home was built. One nod to the age of their home is the basket weave tile on the shower floor. Because some of the other areas of their home have been updated, this was a really nice way to marry modern and historic elements together for a classic look. They also have chrome handle hardware, faucets, and shower fixtures that continue the same aesthetic through the space. The waterfall shower head adds a really special elegant touch to the space.
Creating Custom Design Solutions
Throughout this project we were able to really show off our ability to creatively solve problems which create a positive impact in our client’s day to day lives. Projects like these are often more complicated than selecting a new tile and new vanity hardware.
