Builder Grade to Contemporary Chic

A Dream Multipurpose Space

Heather and her family are turning their unfinished basement into a multi-use recreation space. They needed extra room for movie marathons, girls' nights, and sleeping areas for overnight guests. We're proud to reveal the end result of this interior remodeling project.

Heather loves the new space, and the family is using it for so many different things already. "It's been a dream of mine to have it finished." The kids can spread out across the finished basement, making messes that don't have to be cleaned up right away. The crafting and homework nook provides a versatile workspace with a gorgeous stained butcher block and extra overhead cabinets for storage.

A Bold Bathroom Addition

Adding a bathroom to a basement makes the entire space more usable. Heather is thrilled with this addition. "It's hard to believe at one point this wasn't even a bathroom." She followed Kate's recommendation to use a peach paint color, which brings sunshine and brightness into the basement. The bathroom floor tiles add bold contrast to the room and are one of the family's favorite features.

Room for Everybody to Enjoy

Opening the exterior doors in this walkout basement provides direct access to the yard and swing set. Heather enjoys the freedom and openness, saying it gives her kids "an invitation to run." Her husband is already planning a sleepover with the kids to utilize the large, beautiful spaces.

Heather and her family can't wait to have guests over to show off the completed basement. "It's a great area for entertaining and having friends over. We are sure that we'll enjoy it for years to come." Be sure to check out both the before and after video to fully appreciate this amazing transformation!

6 Years in the Making

Homeowner Heather had been anticipating a basement build-out for more than six years when she hired Mint Construction. Her family had used the unfinished space for many purposes but were ready to take the next step. "We've had storage down here. We rode bikes down here. We started our chickens as chicks in this area. It's been like a multi-purpose area, but we decided to finish it and use it for what we need.”

Room for the Whole Family to Enjoy

She wanted to have an additional family room area with a TV for girls' nights or teen game nights.  She wanted storage for books, toys and games so they could spread out and have fun.  She envisioned an open-ended play area, cabinets, a desk going the full length of the wall, and crafting/homework space.

Kate loves the flexibility that basements provide. "When you have a growing family and your kids get older and they want privacy, they have a place to come and do their thing.  Obviously sometimes parents need privacy to escape their children.  Now it will be a multi-purpose area that's finished."

Bringing the Space to Life

Mint Construction began with renderings to help Heather see what the rooms would actually look like. As Kate explained, "Some people are very visual, and that's how they understand things.  Just saying 'this here' and 'this here' becomes so overwhelming."

"It was nice to see the actual physical options before it was finished here."  Heather has enjoyed watching the drawings come to life before her eyes. "When I came down here on Friday, when I saw the framing, I knew it was getting real.  It's surreal that it's happening.  I've wanted this to happen for so long.  It's been a dream of mine to have it finished down here."
